History of the Institute

 

Institute of Solution Chemistry (ISC) – is the institution of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the main investigation trend of which is considering fundamental problems of solutions physical chemistry and elaboration of theoretical foundations for obtaining liquid phase materials. ISC is among the world leaders in the sphere of solutions research.
 
ISC RAS history dates back to October, 10, 1974, when the USSR Academy of Sciences organized Nonaqueous Solution Chemistry Laboratory (resolution № 991, signed by the USSR AS President academician M.V.Keldish). That decision was made in view of the fact that by then nonaqueous solution chemistry academic school, headed by the Rector of Ivanovo Institute of Chemistry and Technology Gennadij A. Krestov, had already existed. In the following five years the laboratory displayed its efficiency, and personal acquaintance of academician A.P.Alexandrov with Ivanovo chemists achievements led to the organization of independent scientific institution on the basis of the Nonaqueous Solution Chemistry Department on October, 18, 1979 (resolution № 1099, signed by the USSR AS President academician A.P. Alexandrov). Finally, on January, 22, 1981 the Department was reorganized into Nonaqueous Solution Chemistry Institute (resolution № 146) under the leadership of G.A.Krestov.
 
A number of factors conditioned the establishment and growth of SCI RAS particularly in Ivanovo.
 
Ivanovo is a large research and educational center. At that time there were one State University and six Institutes under the authority of RSFSR Ministry of Education in it. 
 
Ivanovo region has historically been the largest center of textile industry constantly requiring application of new materials and technological procedures. It also housed several research institutes. 
 
By 1981 the scientific school of the USSR AS corresponding member G.A. Krestov, has been formed. It was and is developing principles of a new structural thermodynamics approach to investigation of solvation phenomena, based on the integration of two separated trends in solution study. 
 
Thus, the presence of academic and educational facilities in Ivanovo, the need in fundamental investigations and their practical value for the textile industry and appearance of promising scientific trend were the objective basis of organizing in Ivanovo an academic institution capable of solving important scientific and engineering problems in the sphere of solution chemistry.

The process of the Institute foundation was accompanied by considerable difficulties and various inter-departmental disputes. Vital role in the Institute establishing was played by the Executive Secretary of the Ivanovo C.P.S.U. Regional Committee V.G. Klyuev, the President of the State Committee on Science and Engineering of the USSR Council of Ministers G.I. Marchuk, the Academician-Secretary of Physical Chemistry and Inorganic Materials Engineering Department academician N.M. Zhavoronkov, the academician Y.A. Buslaev, the Deputy Minister of RSFSR Higher and Secondary Vocational Education, corresponding member of the USSR AS A.M. Kutepov. However it was due to G.A. Krestov’s great scientific authority and organizing talent that the Institute had become a competent research institution of the USSR AS and a recognized scientific center, famous in our country and abroad.
 
 
 
 
Academician A.M. Kutepov
After sudden death of G.A.Krestov in 1994, Academician A.M. Kutepov headed the Institute until 2001. Due to his commitment and organizational activity the Institute has not just survived all the hardships of the reform period, but has retained its staff and scientific potential. In 1998, according to the resolution of RAS Presidium, the Nonaqueous Solution Chemistry Institute was renamed as RAS Solution Chemistry Institute. Until 2004 academician A.M.Kutepov was a research supervisor of the SCI RAS and headed one of its laboratories.
 
 
 
Since 2001 the head of SCI RAS is professor Anatolij G. Zakharov.
 
At present the Institute is elaborating some vital scientific problems in the sphere of chemistry. These are: the development of solution theory, investigation of solution structure, molecular interactions and solvent effect on biological and engineering processes, production of liquid phase materials with desired and adjustable properties.

The Institute basic priorities of fundamental researches are:
 
  • developing liquid phase theory: correlation between structure and properties of single- and multi-component systems; problems of solvation and complexation in solutions; developing modern concept of associated liquids as self-organizing complex chemical systems;
  • theoretical foundations of chemical engineering processes in liquid phase; intensification of processes in solutions by extremal condition;
  • coordination chemistry of macrocyclic compounds, synthesis and reactivity of porphyrins and their derivatives;
  • processes on the phase boundary: solvent effect in heterogeneous processes; development of efficient ecologically safe technologies of annually renewable raw materials processing.
 
ISC RAS basic designs deal with studying solution properties, working out theoretical basis of chemical engineering and obtaining liquid phase materials. 
 
Principal advances are the following:
 
  • on the basis of comprehensive investigation of solvent local structure self-organization effects and preferential solvation, the correlation between multi-particle interactions and collective modes in multi-component solutions are established;
  • major laws of correlation between universal solvation, preferential solvation, complexation of porphyrins, phthalocyanines, crown ethers and their metal complexes, structurally related linear and cyclic polypyrrol compounds, and molecular parameters of objects under investigation are determined;
  • directional synthesis of cyclic tetrapyrrol compounds with unique properties, conditioning their wide application in science, engineering and medicine is carried out;
  • methods of physicochemical properties investigation and obtaining cellulose derivatives out of annually renewable raw materials (flax, hemp, etc.) on the basis of wide application of solutions as perspective sources in production of textile materials, explosives, etc. are introduced.
 
a number of new materials is developed, such as:
  • high-performance fire retardants “Tezagran” (oxygen index 30 – 50) and compositions on their basis for complex finishing (fireproof, biocidity increase, water resistance and/or oil resistance, antisoiling) natural and synthetic fibers materials;
  • “Modilen” fibers (including their simultaneous dyeing) for imparting the textile materials a number of new consumer properties.  The fibers pilot batch is put on the market (about seven tons);
  • surgical polypropylene suture with antiinflammatory activity due to the local aspirin allotment, lowering leucocyte number in the surgical suture in 1.7 times;
  • high-efficiency oil products sorbents on the basis of highly refined polyethylene powder, obtained by the original technology out of polyethylene wastes.
 
Among the research fellows of the Institute there are: four the USSR State prize-winners, ten RF Government prize-winners on science and engineering, seven RF Meritorious Workers, four Honorary Chemists, three RF Higher Education Honorary Workers. In the last 3 years 28 domestic and foreign grants are won.
