Regular meeting of the Physical Chemistry of Solutions and Fluids seminar

25.03.2022

On March 23, 2022, ISC RAS held a regular meeting of the Physical Chemistry of Solutions and Fluids seminar.

Yury Budkov, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Head of Laboratory, gave a talk on Modified Poisson-Boltzmann Equations and Respective Stress Tensors. Application to Inhomogeneous Ionic Fluids and Electrolyte Solutions.

The speaker presented a general field theory approach based on the thermodynamic perturbation theory. The presented approach makes it possible to derive from first principles modified Poisson-Boltzmann equations for inhomogeneous electrolyte solutions and ionic fluids as the Euler-Lagrange equation for a grand thermodynamic potential. He also described the application of Noether’s theorem to deriving a general expression for the stress tensor and, based on it, general expressions for the macroscopic force acting on a dielectric or conductive body immersed in an ionic fluid. And finally the speaker explained how a general mean-field expression for the disjoining pressure in an inhomogeneous electrolyte solution or an ionic fluid in a slit nanopore was derived.
